| Weer zoiets moois uit Belgenland. Orange Black is een band die
alles mee heeft. Dat de opnamen van de derde cd Morning Notes van
start gingen toen de rest van de wereld knus onder de kerstboom
bijeenzat heeft vruchten afgeworpen. Elementen uit de jaren zestig
en de jaren tachtig kruipen naadloos door elkaar heen, verfijnde
elektronica bokst op tegen stuiterende gitaren en weemoedige zanglijnen
vervlechten zich met mathematische drumbeats. Je kunt linksaf naar
de moderne pop van Notwist en Phoenix, rechtsaf naar Amerikaanse
mythes als Byrds en Neil Young, de omweg volgen via Lambchop en
Calexico of Undertones en Ride en dan stoom je langzaam maar zeker
op het wezen van Orange Black af. Belgenpop was zelden zo kleurrijk
als bij dit Orange Black, het zoveelste voorbeeld van de manier
waarop onze zuiderburen Eurosonic naar hun hand zullen zetten.

| The Belgians have done it again. Orange Black is one of those
bands that have got it all. They started recording their third CD
Morning Notes while the rest of the world was cuddling by the Christmas
tree and somehow this has done the outcome a lot of good. Elements
from the sixties are linked with the eighties, refined electronics
compete with jumping guitars and melancholy vocals are sung over
mathematic drumbeats. Either turn left to the modern pop of Notwist
and Phoenix, right to American myths as The Byrds and Neil Young,
take the tourist route via Lambchop and Calexico or The Undertones
and Ride, and slowly you will proceed to what's Orange Black is
all about. They are one of the most colourful Belgian bands, and
that should say something.
