Manchester: een stad met een muzikale geschiedenis om diep voor door het stof te gaan. Maar het is natuurlijk niet zo dat een uitputtend tourschema langs de clubs, bars en buurthuizen van de noordelijke hoek van Manchester automatisch tot eeuwige roem leidt. Dat gold dan weer wel voor Alfie, een uitermate ambachtelijk opererend kwintet dat de invloeden uit lang vervlogen tijden tot zich neemt, ze eens flink opschudt er er puike pop op akoestische grondslag voor anno 2004 van maakt. De groep maakte al een paar albums en drukte bovendien een stevig stempel op ‘Hour Of The Bewilderbeast’ van Badly Drawn Boy, let maar eens goed op die fraaie strijkers- en blazersarrangementen. En met het laatste album ‘Do You Imagine Things?’ in de knapzak moet het helemaal goed komen met deze popsmeden.

Manchester has a musical history that’s so impressive one can only bow his head in awe. Yet there is no law that says an extensive tour of all the clubs, bars and community centres in the northern part of Manchester will bring eternal fame. It did for Alfie though. Alfie is a good old-fashioned quintet that takes influences from times long gone by, shakes them up for a bit and turns them into quality pop on an acoustic basis. The band have already made a couple of albums and put a clear stamp on Badly Drawn Boy’s ‘Hour of the Bewilderbeast’, especially in the wonderful strings and horn arrangements. With their own latest album ‘Do You Imagine Things?’ success should be guaranteed for these goldsmiths of pop.
