Post-Hardcore
We kenden al postrock, postmodernisme en postkantoor, en daar verzint Brazen eigenhandig een nieuwe categorie bij. De Zwitsers buigen zich al vanaf 1995 over wat zij post-hardcore noemen. In hun geval komt dat neer op uiterst gedreven muziek die enerzijds afbuigt richting emocore (op zichzelf al een vorm van post-hardcore, hehe) en anderzijds het losse heeft van het soort rock dat niet bang is om af en toe een lekker potje te improviseren. Niet dat de twee gitaristen zich nu meteen laten gaan in Allman Brothers-achtige gitaarduels, maar hun partijen glijden steevast melodieus om elkaar heen om dan weer haaks op elkaar in te beuken en tenslotte als een stel gesmeerde tandwielen in elkaar te grijpen. Ze kijken niet op een ingewikkeld songstructuurtje meer of minder en de grooves zijn loodzwaar en toch vloeiend. Luister maar naar ‘Orphaned’. Zulke platen wil je elke dag wel bij de post vinden!


Post-Hardcore
We already knew post-rock, post-modernism and post-office. In 1995, Swiss Brazen single-handedly added a new post: post-hardcore. Extremely driven music, which leans partly on emocore (which is in itself a form of post-hardcore, hey) and partly on the loose type of rock that is not afraid for a bit of improvisation. It’s not that the two guitarists lose themselves in Allman Brothers-type of guitar duels, but their parts slide melodically around each other, then crash and collide and ultimately come together like two well-oiled gearwheels. The song structures are complex and the grooves are heavy yet fluent. Listen to ‘Orphaned’. If only you would get albums like that in your little post-box every day.
