Gothic Werelds
Gothic metal mag reuze modieus zijn, het etiket is eigenlijk veel te klein voor Epica. De groep omvat veel meer: invloeden uit de Arabische en Zuid-Amerikaanse muziek en het betere soundtrack-wezen, de klassiek geschoolde mezzosopraan Simone Simons en, in de studio tenminste, een echt koor en een forse strijkerssectie. Gitarist en spil Mark Jansen had in zijn vorige groep After Forever al een beetje aan zulke stijlmiddelen geroken, maar met Epica krijgt het talent van hem en zijn bandgenoten al helemaal vleugels. Epica gaat het ver schoppen, al was het maar omdat je de bandnaam zo leuk kunt scanderen.

Worldly Gothic
Trendy though gothic metal may be, the label will not stick here. It’s too small for Epica, for their music contains much more: influences from Arabic and South American music and the better soundtracks, classically educated mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, and, at least in the studio a real choir and an extensive string section. Guitarist and bandleader Mark Jansen had already played around with these elements in his former band After Forever, but in Epica his and his band members’ talents thrive like never before. Epica is headed for success, if only because their band name is so suitable for chanting.
