Als je als Scandinavische band bezig bent met, wat zullen we zeggen, americana, dan vraag je natuurlijk om zo’n woordspelige genre-omschrijving. Toch zit er een kern van waarheid in. Want het uit wereldstad Kopenhagen afkomstige Wynona leeft zich enerzijds volstrekt overtuigend in in Amerikaanse plattelandsmuziek, zodanig zelfs dat ze er in Austin, Texas en andere buitengebieden aldaar moeiteloos plat voor gaan. Maar aan de andere kant geven ze er een heel eigenzinnige, noem het dan maar noordelijke wending aan. Duistere ballads maken ze, waarin het enige licht het noorderlicht is. Ze zijn duidelijk hoorbaar op het goede spoor gezet door Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris en de klankbepalende producer-muzikant Daniel Lanois, beroemd om het prachtalbum ‘For The Beauty Of Wynona’.

A Scandinavian band playing, shall we say, Americana – that’s asking for our genre-description. But not only is it (supposed to be) witty, it’s also fitting. Copenhagen-based Wynona so convincingly play this American music that even people in Austin, Texas and other rural areas fall for them. Mind you, the band definitely manages to give it a Northern twist. Wynona’s ballads are so dark the only light is the Northern light. Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris and producer-musician Daniel Lanois have clearly put them on the right track, famous for the wonderful album ‘For The Beauty Of Wynona’.
