Avril is, zegt de bio, voor elektronische muziek wat Bob Dylan is
voor country: a f***ing outsider. Boude woorden, we weten het, maar
er zit een kern van waarheid in. Avril is zelf ook een outsider,
met zijn etnische wortels in Zuidwest-Frankrijk, Engeland en het
Caribisch gebied. Maar in Parijs voelt hij zich opperbest thuis,
vooral sinds die stad met het pionierswerk van Daft Punk en Motorbass
op de kaart is gezet als broeinest van Fransen die Dansen. Maar de
muzikale begrenzingen van die Parijse house-hausse, hoe vrijzinnig
ook, zijn te nauw voor wat Avril op zijn twee albums neerzet. Dat
is een breed scala van emoties en stijlen, met als klapper een uiterst
surrealistische versie van Li’l Louis’ houseklassieker
French Kiss.

According to his bio Avril is for electronica what Bob Dylan is for country:
a f***ing outsider. Boldly spoken, but not necessarily untrue. His ethnical
roots in the Southwest of France, England and the Caribbean at least make
him a bit of an unusual specimen. It is in Paris where he feels most at
home, especially since Daft Punk and Motorbass put this city on the map
as a breeding place for French dance. On his two albums Avril goes a bit
further than just the Paris scene, incorporating a broad range of emotions
and styles. Its absolute high point is a surrealist version of Li’l
Louis’ house classic French Kiss.
