Toch is ‘gitaarpop’ geen term die recht doet aan de prachtmuziek
van HAL. Maar welke andere omschrijving wel? Het draait bij HAL toch
om die fijne, meerstemmige zang, gevat in compacte, ook eenstemmig
meeneuriebare liedjes. The Beach Boys horen natuurlijk bij het referentiekader,
maar ook die luchtige en onverwacht onsterfelijk geworden bubblegum-pop
uit de jaren zestig. Fans van The ook al Ierse Thrills moeten zeker
even opletten, want HAL maakt uit soortgelijke uitgangspunten ook
hele mooie dingen.

The guitar pop tag does not do justice to HAL’s outstanding music.
But what term does? Most striking in their music are the compact catchy
songs clothed in vocal harmonies. HAL are clearly influenced by The
Beach Boys, but equally important is the immortal lightweight bubblegum
of the 60s. If you like The Thrills, also from Ireland, you don’t
want to miss HAL.
