De kiemen van de Memory Band liggen in de computer van Stephen Cracknell. Maar dat gestoei in het digitale domein is uitgelopen op een groep die, live, niet minder dan zeven leden telt. Die bespelen dus ook zulke rare instrumenten als viool en harmonium. ’t Is dus geen standaard-bandje, maar dat valt ook niet te verwachten van die Cracknell. Hij speelt bas in de live-band van Badly Drawn Boy en maakt soundtrack-achtige elektronica als Gorodish. In Memory Band koppelt hij de verworvenheden van het computertijdperk aan de warmte van een akoestische folk-opzet. En wie een nummer covert van cellist annex disco-avantgardist Arthur Russell kan bij ons geen kwaad meer doen.

Memory Band was born on the computer of Stephen Cracknell. His digital efforts gradually turned into a real band of no less than seven people. Their instruments include violin and harmonium. Not a standard rock band, but then, that’s not what we’d expect from Cracknell, who’s the bass-player in Badly Drawn Boy’s live band and makes soundtrack-like electronica in Gorodish. In Memory Band he combines the advantages of the computer era with the warmth of an acoustic folk outfit. Their cover of cellist annex disco-avantgardist Arthur Russell is of course the best news of all.
