Britpop uit Haarlem? Welja, waarom niet. Zanger-gitarist Bart ‘Stash’ van Liemt heeft immers toegang tot dezelfde bronnen als willekeurig welk Brits gitaarbandje. Ook in huize Van Liemt staan Beatles, Small Faces, Kinks en de groten van de jaren-negentig-britpop dagelijks op het luistermenu. Het offensief waarmee The Sheer aan het Nederlandse volk is voorgesteld doet ook al denken aan de hype-industrie die vaak aan Engelse bands te pas komt. Na het flitsende debuutalbum The Keyword Is Excitement stonden ze op elke festivalwei binnen de landsgrenzen, met veel succes. Maar ook voor die tijd stond het speelplezier ondubbelzinnig voorop, of het nu ging om luxe zalen of de spreekwoordelijke kroeg in Nergenshuizen, tussen biljart en wc-deur.

Britpop from Haarlem, the Netherlands? And why not? Singer-guitarist Bart ‘Stash’ van Liemt can listen to the same sources any British guitar band can. At the Van Liemt residences too, the Beatles, Small Faces, Kinks and the big names of the 90s britpop are on the daily menu. Even the media offensive that went with the introduction of The Sheer reminds us of the hype industry that often surrounds English bands. After the exciting debut The Keyword Is Excitement they played every festival in the country, and successfully so. But before that too, excitement to play was indeed the keyword, whether it was in a half-empty bar in the middle of nowhere or in prestigious clubs.
